Each week during the summer, The Columbia County News-Times will highlight a different high school with a look back at its five biggest stories from the previous school year. This week's focus is on Augusta Prep. The Cavaliers' year was an eventful one.

To say that Cortland Lowe III arrived at this week's U.S. Open out of nowhere would be grossly unfair. But it's not too far from the truth. Cortland Lowe caught the golf bug with his childhood neighbor Charles Howell. The one-time Augusta golf prodigy removed himself from the competitive side of the game about four years ago, but the desire never really expired. Mr. Lowe, 29, spent the past three years as a teaching pro in San Diego at the Santaluz Club. With the downturn in the economy, his lessons took a hit last fall.

His dad, Tom Norton, coached the soccer teams at Georgia Southern University, and Hunter was a fixture at Eagles practices, games and summer camps. Tom Norton is the Augusta Prep Boys' Soccer coach for the 2009-2010 season. Read more.
