Middle School

The Middle School program at Augusta Prep seeks to support students through the incredible physical, emotional, social, and cognitive changes of the middle school years, and also helps them discover and develop their distinct strengths and talents.

In a lively, friendly, and inviting climate of mutual respect, students are offered challenging academic courses. Delivered in small class sizes, these courses are developed to capture the curiosity and energy of the middle school student. The curriculum is enhanced by offerings in computer, art, music, and daily physical education.

Using an interdisciplinary team teaching approach creates relationships between courses, teachers and students. Creating these connections gives students the opportunity to see the whole picture.

The middle school years mark the students' realization of their individual strengths. Because of this new-found awareness, teachers present classes in various ways to accommodate different learning styles. In addition to teaching, faculty members serve as advisors and coaches to students. Working in small advisory groups at each grade level, advisors and students focus on an area of development and encourage exploration of personal identity in an atmosphere of trust and respect.

Beginning in the fifth grade, students are carefully guided through the transition from the self-contained classroom setting of the Lower School to the departmentalized structure of the Upper School. As a team, teachers and students work to establish solid work habits and organizational skills as they explore subject matter in depth.

Outside the classroom, there are numerous opportunities for students to explore their strengths and talents, such as clubs, drama, and athletic options. Community service is an important part of the Augusta Prep Middle School experience. Our students get involved in many projects, such as visits to area nursing homes, and various drives for the needy throughout the year.

Annual class trips are another example of ways children learn beyond the confines of the classroom. Fifth through eigth grades depart for a three to four-day trip early in the school year. Our off-campus programs give both faculty and students, whether new or returning, opportunities to interact in a variety of situations. As a result we see leaders emerge, new friendships develop, and old friendships strengthened.

Confessions

of a Self-Proclaimed

Dinosaur!

I have been involved in education for a long time, both as a student and as a teacher.  I've seen many changes and trends come and go; goals have changed, and so has the role of teacher.  Today's educational establishment is highly politicized with goals far beyond the teaching of ideas and skills to enable a person to succeed in society.  Education today, teaching today, is often an instrument of social engineering.  The focus has changed from teaching how to think to teaching what to think.

(NOTE: Veteran English teacher Wayne Buckley first presented this article to the Augusta Prep faculty several years ago, having been asked to share his wisdom on the art of teaching.)
