Performing Arts
Augusta
Preparatory Day
School boasts a top-notch theatre program with
high student participation. Classes are offered in theatre, advanced theatre
and musical theater, and performances are now held in the beautiful Hull Fine
Arts Center.
The fall season in Augusta Prep's upper school usually
includes a dramatic play along with a play presented by the advanced theater
class and/or the musical theatre class. Recent productions have included
Shakespeare's "The Twelfth Night," Jim Leonard's depression-era tale "The
Diviners," "All in the Timing," six humorous one-act plays by David Ives and
"Don't Fear the Reaper," a comedy by Eddie Zipperer. This fall season will
include performances of "A Chorus Line," J.B. by Archibald MacLeish and "Jupiter
Jones: The Rock ‘n Roll Vampire Killer" by Eddie Zipperer.
Middle school students in the 7th and 8th
grades can enjoy participating in one semester of musical theatre, either in
the fall or spring, which has replaced the theatre classes beginning in the
2008-2009 school year. Each class presents a full production at the end of the
semester.
The focus of the spring season in the upper school is the
production of the annual musical, which is usually a large production in which
nearly one-quarter of the upper school student body participates. Past
productions have included "Gypsy," "Les Miserables," "A Funny Thing Happened on
the Way to the Forum," "Sweeney Todd," "Into the Woods," "Anything Goes" and
"Footloose." The musicals have become sell-out hits and have established Prep
as one of the Augusta-areas premiere theatrical organizations.
During the spring musicals students have the opportunity to
work with professional musicians, professional lighting designer Jared Moore
from Chicago and professional choreographer Peter Powlus.
