Augusta Preparatory Day School has been selected as a 2009 recipient of
a $2,000,000 endowment from the Malone Family Foundation to provide
scholarships for gifted students with financial need.
The Malone
Family Foundation was founded in 1997 by Dr. John C. Malone with one
principal objective: to improve access to quality education -
particularly at the secondary school level - for gifted students who
lack the financial resources to best develop their talents.
Mrs.
Cathie Wlaschin, Executive Director of the Foundation, stated in her
letter inviting Augusta Prep to submit a proposal, that the Foundation
was interested in the school, "because of our continued belief in your
potential as a strong educational option for the gifted and talented ."
With the 2009 award, Augusta Prep becomes the only Malone Family
Foundation school in Georgia.
One
of the region's premier independent, non-sectarian, college preparatory
schools, Augusta Prep was founded in 1960 and will soon celebrate its
fiftieth anniversary. Head of School, Jack Hall, sees the Malone award
as a transformational moment for the school and community. "While the
gift is a tremendous affirmation of our school, more importantly, lives
and communities will be changed as those without the means to afford an
outstanding independent school education will benefit from the most
important investment - one made in a child's mind and future."
The
school--fresh from conducting the second largest capital campaign in
Augusta history for the purpose of building new facilities--already
devotes 13% of its budget to financial aid. The Malone award will allow
the school to make its program available to even more high-achieving
students with limited financial resources.
Augusta Prep's mission
is to provide the highest quality college preparatory education in the
region, and one-hundred percent of its graduates matriculate to
four-year colleges and universities. Members of the Class of 2009 were
accepted to many of the nation's finest college and universities,
including : Cornell, Duke, Emory, Furman, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Johns
Hopkins, Lehigh, Rice, UNC, Penn, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Yale. In
addition, the forty-eight graduates were awarded more than $1,600,000
in scholarship funds for college.
